BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR NEXT CARPET

Carpet buying checklist
When you come to purchase your
new carpet

  • Know your room size.
  • Know what the room will be used for. Is it high use?
Does it get a lot of sun?
  • Bring fabric samples for furniture and accessories you wish to match.
  • Decide the style and fiber you prefer.
  • Mention whether you have
    pets or children?

Determine your budget. Pacific Coast Carpet makes financing available to qualified buyers.

Top Carpet Considerations
Money invested in a carpet with good density, good twist and a dense pad will pay off with extra years of beauty and use.

Carpet Density.
Ever had a carpet that matted down? If so, you've had first-hand experience with a carpet that wasn't dense enough. The most important thing when purchasing a carpet is the density of the carpet. The denser it is, the more wear resistant the carpet will be over time. Density is measured by how much fiber weight per square yard (e.g. a 30 oz. or 80 oz. carpet).

Twist.
The second most critical factor is carpet twist. The more tightly twisted each individual fiber, the better resiliency and wear your carpet will have.

Pad or Cushion.
Choosing the right pad for your new carpet is almost as important as the carpet itself. A denser pad or cushion will give your carpet more protection. It will also add to the carpet's insulation and noise-reduction characteristics.

Nylon, Polyester, Olefin or Wool?
So many products. So many fiber choices. Selecting your next carpet can be a daunting task. In reality, there are only four basic fibers used in today's card trademarking new fiber treatments. Names like Stainmaster and Crushresister are branded nylon fibers. Keep in mind that density, twist and the carpet pad are more important to a carpet's quality and durability than the fiber. Visit our showroom to get to know the carpet types firsthand.

  • Nylon is very versatile and available in more colors and styles than any other fiber. The most commonly used fiber in carpeting today, nylon accounts for 65% of all carpet sold in the U.S.. Nylon, the world's first synthetic fiber, has undergone many improvements since Dupont introduced it in the late 1930's.
  • Polyester fiber feels soft and luxurious, more like wool than any other synthetic fiber. Developed in the 1960's, polyester accounts for approximately 10% of all carpet sold. It's usually found in cut pile and textured constructions. While not quite as resilient as nylon, a well-made polyester carpet will give years of excellent performance.
  • Olefin/polypropylene fiber is usually sold as a level loop or berber and performs very well and is resistant to crush in this construction. When solution-dyed, they are very resistant to fading, static electricity, moisture and mildew. Olefin makes a great carpet for outdoor as well as indoor use. This fiber type accounts for 20% of all carpet sold.
  • Wool sets the standard against which all other fibers are measured. Its luxurious feel and appearance has been appreciated for centuries. While top-of-the-line carpeting is available, wool is primarily used in decorative rugs. A natural fiber, wool is the longest-wearing fiber, is easy to clean and naturally resists stains as well as moisture. Wool accounts for the last 5% of carpet sold.
